The School Board's Election Districts

I started the campaign to change the School Board's election districts in 2006, after being rebuffed in private meetings with School Board members.  The approach that finally worked was to go through our elected State legislators and get them to order changes.  This involved asking many people to contact them.

The next election for School Board will have districts with equal populations, unlike the prior situation:

The two eastern townships had 53% of the voters and elected two members to the School Board -- the western three townships had 47% and elected four members.  The (2002) School Board had voted to redistrict, but Rep. Joe Kiser told the School Board that he wouldn't submit a bill to the General Assembly unless they got the County Commissioners to agree (Kiser ignored the detail that state law says the commissioners explicitly have no say in the matter).  When the commissioners turned down the idea, the School Board gave up.

The School Board has what are called a "residency" district.  In this scheme the candidates must live in a certain part of the county but are elected by everyone.
